Taiwan for US B2B Technology Companies: Market, Supply Chain and Base

Why Taiwan matters in B2B

Taiwan sits at the centre of the world's semiconductor industry and builds a large share of its electronics, servers and components. The companies that design, make and assemble this hardware are concentrated in a small area, along with their suppliers.

For a US company selling design software, industrial software, security, AI infrastructure or supply chain tools, the buyers are here. So are many of the engineers who decide what gets used.

How Taiwanese companies buy

Practical and price-aware. Buyers want to see that a product works and what it saves. Proofs of concept are common and expected.

Engineering-led. Technical teams have a strong voice in the decision. A product that wins the engineers has a good chance with management.

Through local partners. Distributors and system integrators handle much of the enterprise software market, including Mandarin-language support and local contracting.

Faster than Japan. Decision chains are shorter, and many companies are family-run or founder-led, so a senior sponsor can move things quickly.

What you need

  • Traditional Chinese for the interface, documentation and support. Simplified Chinese is not a substitute.
  • A local partner with relationships in your target industry.
  • Technical pre-sales support, because evaluations are hands-on.
  • Patience on price. Expect negotiation, and expect pilots before commitments.

Taiwan as a base for the region

Beyond the local market, Taiwan works as a base.

  • It shares a time zone with Singapore and Hong Kong and is one hour behind Tokyo and Seoul.
  • Flights to Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong and Singapore are short.
  • Engineering talent is strong and costs less than in Singapore or Japan.
  • The government runs programmes to attract foreign professionals, including the Employment Gold Card, which I hold.

I relocated to Taipei for these reasons. I can be in most of the region's business centres within a few hours and work the same day as teams in all of them.

When Taiwan is not the right first market

If your buyers are banks, insurers or professional services firms, Hong Kong is a better start. If you need the largest possible enterprise market, that is Japan. Taiwan fits best when your customers are in technology manufacturing, or when you want a cost-effective base with strong engineers.

Common questions

Is Taiwan a good first Asian market for a US software company?

Yes, if your customers are in semiconductors, electronics or manufacturing. For general enterprise software, Hong Kong is usually an easier first step and Japan a larger one.

Do I need a local company to sell in Taiwan?

Not for first sales through a distributor or integrator. A local entity or branch makes sense once you hire staff or sign several direct customers. Take local advice.

Can business in Taiwan be done in English?

Engineers and managers at larger technology companies often work in English. Contracts, support and day-to-day communication with most customers are in Mandarin.
